Disinformation in Iraq

My dad told me about my other grandad (on my mum's side), that during the Second World War he spent some time in Iraq.

My grandad, Pop,  never talked much about the war, although he did tell my dad this about Iraq

"Iraq has two rivers; the Euphrates and the Tigris."

Told you he didn't say much. Anyway, dad thinks Pop said he travelled up the valley between the rivers as part of the British Army brigade that landed in Basra to remove the pro-Nazi government of Iraq. My brother also relayed a story about Pop that somehow Pop ended up helping to run a radio disinformation campaign outside Baghdad/inside Baghdad/somewhere in Iraq - hoping to persuade the Germans that there were a lot more British troops than their four jeeps and one lorry that they really were.

Men's feet in terrible condition. Huge number of athlete's foot cases. Please send fifteen thousand new boots.

Thought for the day: Zak asked "Do you think Saddam Hussein gets as much spam and junk in his email as I do in my inbox?"
Probably.

Trooper M.Perret

Trooper M.Perret, 1939When war broke out Pop (Maurice Perret) was in the Life Guards and went to France. On New Years Day, 1940, his squadron embarked on a ship on the south coast of France bound for Egypt, and Pop once told my dad how he went down into the hold to take care of the horses, which if you can imagine - stank utterly of horse urine. It was, however, a great way to clear one's head.

The only other event I know of... at Port Said, on the 25th December 1943, Pop met up with his oldest brother Ray who had emigrated to New Zealand and Pop hadn't seen for almost 15 years. Pop finished the war in the 21st Army Group.
